This month, TSAA is very pleased to feature Sunflower Air Service of Atwood, Kansas, on our front cover.
Sunflower Air Service is owned and operated by Gary Worthy who received his flight training in the Army as a reconnaissance pilot in Vietnam. He gained many hours of flight experience which he has converted to civilian use.
Gary started Sunflower Air Service two years ago at the Atwood Municipal Airport in Northwest Kansas and currently uses a Hughes 269 Helicopter to spray dry land crops such as wheat, milo and alfalfa. He is also licensed in nearby Nebraska where he sprays irrigation type crops.
Gary has a Pawnee which is available for back-up when needed and a ground support truck that goes to the field with him that not only serves as a fuel and chemical carrier, but as a landing pad for his helicopter. (see picture right)
In the winter, Sunflower changes from a crop spraying operation into a flight school where Gary instructs in a helicopter and a Cessna 150.
Between spraying and teaching, Sunflower remains busy year round and on alert to fill customer needs.
