Located at Atwood
Rawlins County Airport in Atwood, Kansas, Sunflower Aero
Inc. was founded in 1975 by Gary Worthy as Sunflower Air Service. The
name was changed in 1998. In The News...
After returning from
Vietnam, where he was an Army helicopter pilot, Gary majored in
Aviation Management at Metropolitan State College in Denver, CO.
Because the local aerial sprayer relocated Gary started the aerial
spraying business to meet the needs of Rawlins County Farmers. In 1998
Sunflower Aero expanded into the ground application business.
By offering both Aerial and Ground application Sunflower Aero
provides a wide variety of goods and services to the farmer.
Sunflower Aero offers application and sales of most AG chemicals and fertilizers, including bulk sales of some chemicals.
Sunflower Aero always strives to offer the best prices and the best
service possible. Customer satisfaction is always our goal. We realize there is a limited number of customers in our area and maintaining their trust is very important to us.
We also offer: Aviation fuel sales,
qualified instruction for Airplanes, Gliders and Helicopters, and
Sunflower Aero's own brand of lawn fertilizer.
Customers
whose wheat received a treatment of fungicide from Sunflower Aero in
2007 averaged from 10-20 bushel increase in yield in a nonscientific
survey. Cost of spraying may be less expensive than the above
mentioned prices unless there is a price increase in fungicides. There
is a rumor that fungicides may be in short supply this year. This is
a good reason to get your name on our list. Remember there is no
obligation to spray. We will use this list for planning purposes
only...Call Gary For Details.
Kansas State University Leaf Rust Update
Please take a look at the report and the picture from Ned Tisserat.
It talks about Wheat Viruses they are seeing this season so far.
The report also
mentions rusts and over the next couple of weeks fields need to be
monitored closely for WSM as well as rusts moving into the area.
......As always, if
you have any questions please call.

Fall
Thistle Spraying - Click Here for
Information Flyer
It is getting that
time of year when we should be making plans and booking acres for fall
thistle spraying in pastures. Fall is a great time to take care of
Musk, Bull, and Canada thistle. For some it will be a very busy time of
year, and for others it is looked at as a way to get some acres out of
the way with and not have to deal with them next spring or summer. As
trees lose there leaves we can make applications to these areas easier,
safer, and more effective. Once the soil temperature cools down,
treatments can take place until the soil freezes or temperatures get so
cold as to damage the plants.
When sprayed in
the fall with Dow AgroScience's Milestone, musk and bull thistle will be
void on that acreage next spring. We find fall applications very
effective! Musk and Bull thistle are biennial and annual thistles. The
crop of thistle rosettes out there right now will be the same flowering
thistles we see next May. While more thistles will likely come up all
fall, winter, and spring, those acres treated with our residual
herbicides will be clean next summer.
Canada Thistle, as
an emerged perennial will also be controlled nicely when sprayed in the
fall. Wait until there is sufficient growth on this perennial, and
root control will be enhanced. Make sure to have properly identified
your thistles, as one native thistle present across the whole state will
require special attention. Wavyleaf thistle is also a perennial, but is
not currently growing. Treatments, if needed on this thistle, are
better when made in late April and May as it has emerged into a healthy
vegetative state.
My
recommendations are as follows:
Fall musk and bull
thistle: Spray 3 oz. Milestone/acre. Begin spraying as soil
temperatures close in on 50F. Usually mid October. Higher rates may be
used on particularly problem areas. For tree areas, wait until all
leaves have turned color and most leaves have dropped.
Fall Canada
Thistle: Spray 5-7 oz. Milestone after the plant has sufficient
regrowth, usually 8-12" Use 7 oz for best long-term root control.
Always add
non-ionic surfactant at 1/4% v/v
For Wavy Leaf
thistle in the spring only: Spray 3-4 oz. Milestone when plants are
actively growing, fully emerged, and bolting up to very early
flowering. Usually in late April through May. The addition of 1/2#
2,4-D will speed and aid control on this species. Applications made
prior to emergence on this perennial do not work. Applications made
after full flowering have no purpose.
